The Challenge:
Transforming Central Village
Downing Construction was tasked with enhancing the University of Leeds’ Central Village, a premium accommodation campus situated in the heart of Leeds.
The project aimed to provide top-tier living spaces for students while integrating green and sustainable elements into the urban campus environment.
Scope of Work:
- Imported Topsoil: Brought in 3000 tonnes of high-quality topsoil to prepare the ground for planting.
- Ornamental Shrub Planting: Enhanced the visual appeal of the campus with diverse ornamental shrubs.
- Heavy Standard Tree Planting: Planted heavy standard trees to provide shade and improve air quality.
- Turfing: Laid turf to create, green lawns across the campus.
- Amenity Seeding: Applied amenity seeding to ensure the growth of durable, low-maintenance grass.
The Transformation:
A Modern Student Hub
Completed in multiple phases, the Central Village now boasts 981 student bedrooms with an additional 474 bedrooms under Phase 3.
The development features a mix of refurbished and new build accommodations designed by John McAslan + Partners. The project also includes ground floor retail spaces, public realms, and a 4500 sq. ft. Tesco Express store.
Impact:
The University of Leeds’ Central Village has become a vibrant hub for student living, offering modern, spacious en suite rooms with excellent communal facilities.
