The Challenge:
Building a sustainable future on historic ground
The Duncombe Barracks development in York sets a new standard for sustainable housing. The project includes 34 Passivhaus-certified homes, designed to reduce energy use and carbon impact.
Each property features air-source heat pumps, solar panels, and timber construction for low embodied carbon. The scheme also includes car parking, cycle stores, and landscaped communal spaces to create a green, people-focused environment.
The Transformation:
A living landscape for a sustainable community
The result is a vibrant, low-carbon neighbourhood surrounded by greenery. The new landscape enhances air quality, encourages outdoor activity, and provides safe, inclusive spaces for residents to enjoy.
Duncombe Barracks now stands as a model of sustainable design — combining innovative housing with natural, resilient green infrastructure.
The Approach:
Delivering sustainable landscaping at scale
Atlas Green partnered with Caddick Construction to deliver the external landscaping works. Our goal was to create green streets and shared spaces that matched the development’s environmental goals.
We installed an underground tree cell system to support healthy root growth and long-term urban canopy cover. Across the site, we laid 2,500m² of turf, planted 2,000 shrubs, and installed 76 mature trees. We also imported 1,000 tonnes of topsoil and fitted play equipment with rubber safety surfacing.
Wildflower turf was added to the SuDS basin, improving biodiversity and supporting local pollinators.
