Horatio’s Garden, Yorkshire: Healing Through Nature

Yorkshire
Horatio’s Garden

Client: Horatio’s Garden Charity  |  Principal Contractor: RLX Construction

The Challenge:

Turning a car park into a place of peace

Horatio’s Garden is a unique outdoor space built within the grounds of a spinal injury centre. The project involved transforming a disused car park into a fully accessible garden designed to support the wellbeing of patients recovering from spinal trauma.

The design needed to be beautiful and calming while also allowing access for wheelchairs and hospital beds.

The Transformation:

Nature and accessibility working together

The result is a stunning garden filled with seasonal colour, mature trees, and calming surfaces. Every area is fully accessible, giving patients and staff a peaceful space to relax, reflect, and reconnect with nature.

This project showcases Atlas Green’s ability to deliver high-impact results in sensitive, challenging environments.

The Approach:

Careful planning and delivery in a live hospital setting

Atlas Green was proud to support this life-enhancing charity project. Our team had to work around tight access, limited storage, and ongoing hospital operations. We used a just-in-time delivery model to ensure materials arrived only when needed.

Despite one of the wettest winters on record, we completed all works on time.
Key landscaping works included:

  • Planting over 30 large mature trees and 34 multi-stem specimens
  • Installing 721 square metres of two-tone resin-bound gravel
  • Laying 600 tonnes of subsoil and topsoil, improved with biochar
  • Creating clean path edges and colour-separated resin areas
  • Planting shrubs and soft landscaping to soften and enhance the space
