Reimagining Hudson Quarter
The Hudson Quarter, a historic site in the heart of York, presented a unique challenge.
Once home to York’s first railway station built in 1841 and later occupied by the 1960s concrete edifice of Hudson House, the area needed a transformation that respected its rich past while meeting modern needs. The existing structures, relics of a bygone brutalist era, were no longer fit for purpose and disconnected from the vibrant life of the city.
The redevelopment needed to not only introduce a contemporary mixed-use space but also integrate seamlessly with York’s historic fabric and address the city’s susceptibility to flooding.
The vision was clear: to create a green oasis that would serve as a bridge between York’s illustrious history and its future, all while enhancing the urban landscape and fostering a strong sense of community and environmental sustainability.
